"I just moved here from Texas and didn't know
where to find the businesses and merchants that
catered to the needs of African-Americans.
Thanks BlackFrederick.com!"

I was afforded the opportunity to
accompany my mother to watching “The Color
Purple” last month at the France Merrick
Performing Arts Center, better known as
The Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore.  Of
course, there are only three scenes out of
the movie that I can remember, so I’m a
little excited.  Upon our arrival, my
nerves really kicked in, but after
settling in our seats, I was ready to go.
The play was…AMAZING! Not knowing the
original movie all the way through I could
not really compare, but the cast captured
my attention, and I was yearning for
more.  After the show, as we were leaving
out, being the people watcher that I am, I
took in my surroundings.  Brothers and
Sisters everywhere, yet there was
diversity.  Everyone dressed for a night
on the town, as if we were on Broadway
watching this production.  When can I go
back to take in the ambience, character,
history and talents of this theatre?
“The “Pryor Experience” is a combination
Jazz Cabaret and Comedy created by Rain
Pryor the daughter of Richard Pryor. She
created a one-woman show based on her life
called “Fried Chicken and Latkes,” an
award-winning production that explored
issues of race and class from her
perspective as an African-American Jewish
woman.” There will only be one show, on
June 6, 2008.  For additional information
(ticket sales and times) please visit the
website and select schedule of events.
Most children look forward to the end of
the school year for summer break,
vacations, sleepovers and just staying up
late.  I loved school as a child, and did
not want it to end.  I would like to think
because of the learning experience I was
receiving, being with my friends and just
knowing I was becoming a big girl.  I
think it was merely for the unlimited
resources at the library.  The scholastic
book fair was fun, but my “allotted” two
book purchases would be completely read
within that first week.  I can even go on
record to saying at least one book was
finished within a day.
Now that I’m older, and all wrapped up in
my “adult” life, I still miss those days.
Staying up late, flashlight under the
covers, straining to see what will happen
next.  As I would sleep that night, I
would end up living the lives of those
characters.  Guess what, we can all get
that experience again.  Who all belongs to
a book club? I do not.  Are you interested
in starting one?
We would only meet once a month and the
book selection would already be done each
time and we just need you to read, show up
and be ready to discuss the questions that
were given by our facilitator.   This
sounds like a wonderful opportunity to
expand our minds, meet new people and
grow!  For additional information on this
particular book club, please check out
www.glorygirlsread.net  After reading
everything over; please do not hesitate to
contact me so that we can get ready for
our first meeting in July 2008.
Since I will be revisiting the book, “The Color Purple”, what
about a book club?
