Eliminating Achievement Gaps continues its efforts to mobilize the community to help eliminate
achievement gaps in Frederick County Public Schools. It truly takes community support, to help
make a difference in students’ lives.
The 3rd organization to be recognized in this series is the Alpha Lambda Lambda Chapter of the
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. The Omegas have been providing a mentoring program at Walkersville
High School since 2001. They have also been serving as mentors for the Frederick Community
College men’s basketball team for the same time period.
Through the Omega’s program at Walkersville High School, young men are given the
opportunity to have frequent regular contact with successful African American males. Some of
the areas of focus for the mentoring are to develop leadership skills, provide guidance on how to
dress for successes, and general tips related to goal setting. Students and their mentors engage in
dialogue about topics selected by the students too. Students learn how to navigate the path to
college. The Omegas also partner with the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity to provide visits to
historically black colleges.
For the FCC young men, that frequent contact with successful African American males is
critical. They help the students adjust to college and navigate the expectations both academically
and athletically. For students new to the Frederick community, the Omegas help them learn
about the city and where to find the different types of services they may need. The Omegas
work with the students to help them matriculate to 4 year schools. One emphasis of the work
with the FCC students is developing sound financial management skills.
The Omegas deserve a lot of credit for their continuing support for students and their families.
