"I just moved here from Texas and didn't know
where to find the businesses and merchants that
catered to the needs of African-Americans.
Thanks BlackFrederick.com!"

The Frederick Club of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women Inc.
The second in this series of articles, showcasing community organizations which support eliminating
achievement gaps, is the Frederick Club of the National Association of Negro Business and
Professional Women (NBPW) Clubs. Inc. The organization was founded in 1960. There were many
educators in that founding group.
The group has provided over $36,000.00 in scholarships over the years. Through the group’s
financial assistance, some students have been able to attend college, who other wise would not
have been able to attend.
Members of the organization mentor an outstanding youth group. Youth come from all walks of life.
Because of their experiences in the NBPW youth group; some students who did not see college as
part of their future have made the decision to go on to college,
For the past 5 years, the group has sponsored a breakfast in honor of the memory of the Reverend
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This event continues to draw a very large audience. Speakers are local
people who have been very successful .Last year one of the Tuskegee airmen was the keynote
speaker. Everyone in attendance is able to hear from these successful role models.
NBPW supports the Eliminating Achievement Gaps monthly meetings, by their regular attendance,
setting up and providing coverage for, the registration table and working on committees. They
sponsored a book drive to support EAG’s early literacy development committee last year. The books
were donated to the Frederick County Head Start Program.
This is a small snapshot of the extensive service the Negro Business and Professional Women’s
club continues to provide the community of Frederick. Many students’ lives have been positively
affected because of the organization’s volunteerism in the community.
