Community Organizations Support for Education

Frederick County Public Schools is fortunate to have extensive support system for the
academic achievement of African American students. This is the first in a series
showcasing outstanding African American organizations that provide that essential
community link to support high academic achievement among African American students. Many
readers may be new to Frederick County and I want to take this opportunity to showcase
these outstanding organizations.

This article will spotlight the Frederick Alumni Chapter Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
The fraternity has been involved with FCPS since 1982. The organization developed an
Honors Awards recognition program to celebrate African American students making honor
roll in 1984. The program is in honor of Theodore Stephens, who died in 1991. Ted
Stephens was a charter member of the Frederick Alumni chapter and was an active member of
the fraternity for over 40 years. Ted Stephens was actively involved in the civil rights
movement. He was employed as a microbiologist at Ft Detrick and served as the Director of
the Frederick County Human Relations Department.

On Sunday May 17, 2008, the fraternity held their 26th, Ted Stephens Honors Awards
program. There were 32 African American seniors recognized for maintaining a grade point
average of 3.5 or better throughout their high school career and there were 673 students
recognized for having made honor roll terms 1-3.

What a wonderful celebration. Thank you to the members of the   Frederick Alumni Chapter,
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated for your annual celebration of high academic
achievement among African American students in Frederick County Public Schools. You make
a difference! You are  part of the solution to  eliminate achievement gaps!
