EAG’s Flip the Script Campaign Being Smart Is Acting Smart

Eliminating Achievement Gaps latest project is to launch a campaign that will engage the
entire community in supporting the concept that high academic achievement is something
all of our students need to strive for everyday. The members of EAG are working
diligently to flip the script to change the phrase being smart is acting white, to being
smart is  acting  smart. EAG wants the students and the community to take the position
that academic achievement is not about color.

At a general meeting in June 2007, the members drew up a list of possible actions to take
to create a culture where academic success is celebrated among African American students.
This Flip the Script campaign is one of the recommendations.

This initiative is needed because some African American students are not reaching their
fullest academic potential for fear of being labeled “acting White” by their peers.
Acting White is getting good grades, being intelligent, and speaking Standard English. So
my question to you is what is acting Black?

The members of EAG want to create a culture to take away the notion of color and academic
achievement –being smart. Being smart is acting smart, getting good grades, being
intelligent and speaking Standard English as called for in school settings.

We want all students to support each other being the best students they can be, so that
they get the best education they can receive, and create options for the future.
The members of EAG need everyone’s help in this campaign. If you hear someone using the
phrase “Being smart is acting White”, flip the script on the person, share EAG’s phrase
being smart is acting smart.
