Eliminating Achievement Gaps (EAG) provides everyone in the community with an opportunity
to engage in ongoing public dialogue about the achievement patterns of African American
students in Frederick County Public Schools.  EAG works in a formal partnership with the
Frederick County Public School System (FCPS).

Anyone is interested in being part of the solutions, to the elimination of achievement
gaps, is welcome to join the organization.  EAG meets the 3rd Saturday in every month,
except July and December, from 10:00 a.m. to noon at Lincoln Elementary School in it’s
“A” Building Multipurpose Room.

Some of the projects the organization has taken on include:
        Serving as tutors and mentors at Lincoln Elementary.
        Loading software on computers donated to EAG by UMBC.  These computers went to
families at Lincoln Elementary who had no computers in their homes.
        Partnering with the NAACP and the Unitarian Universalists Church in a book
drive. Books were distributed to Frederick County Head Start, Lincoln Elementary students
and teachers, and, through the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, to students throughout the
county.
        Advocating for funding at the Board of Education and Board of County
Commissioners meetings to support the budget items targeting the elimination of
achievement gaps.

At the March meeting, EAG launched the “Flip the Script” campaign. This campaign has been
developed to create a culture in the community that celebrates academic success. Too many
students are not reaching their fullest potential because of negative feedback related to
being smart.  EAG’s position is that being smart is not tied to a skin color; being smart
is acting smart. The focus of the April meeting is to develop an action plan with both
short term and long term goals to get the message into the community.  If you want to
help with this initiative, please plan to attend the meeting on April 19, 2008.
