It is my goal to provide the reader with current education information from both a state
and local perspective. The Maryland State Board of Education voted in October 2007, to
require the passage of 4 high school assessments as part of earning a high school diploma
in the state of Maryland. This decision affects all classes beginning with the current
junior class, the class of 2009. The assessments are based on the Maryland High school
Core learning Goals. The tests are freshman and sophomore level and were developed by
Maryland teachers.

The high school assessments are end of courses exams in: algebra/data analysis, biology,
government, and English. All students must take these courses in order to graduate.

In October, the state BOE, also approved the Bridge Plan for Academic Validation for
those students who have been unable to pass the test, even after interventions have been
provided at the school level.
In order to be eligible to participate in the Bridge plan a student must have:
  1. Failed the assessment at least twice
  2. Have participated in intervention programs in their school
  3. Maintained satisfactory attendance
  4. Maintained satisfactory progress toward earning a diploma on time in all areas
    except high school assessments
  5. Passed the high school assessment course

Passing the assessments is only one graduation requirement. Other requirements include
passing each of the courses, earning the state specific credits, completing service
learning requirements and full filling attendance requirements.
