Why Quit Now?

I’m not usually a man that likes to start an argument, but for the last two weeks, a few things have
been troubling me, and I’d like to write about it.
As many of you might know, I serve our community in various ways, and I am especially honored to
have initiated, managed and run a Soup Kitchen ministry at my former place of worship, since 2003.
However, I was very disappointed to hear that because I no longer attend, the 3 remaining
commitments that I arranged with the Frederick Community Action Agency for this year would not be
honored.
As I heard this, I’m ashamed to say, that my first reaction was not very Christian-like, but thanks to
God, I took some time to pray, place this in his hands and let him handle it.
As it is often said – He makes a way, when there is no way.
Thanks to the patience and professionalism of the FCAA, Coordinator of Food and Nutrition Services,
Sarah McAleavey, all of the uncommitted Soup Kitchen volunteer days have been obligated for the rest
of the year.
However, I still have cause to question why a “Pastor” would not encourage his congregation to
continue this particular ministry.
Especially, due to an increasingly troublesome economic time for our nation, many more individuals
and families in our local communities are in need of assistance.
The price of gas, groceries and consumer goods will continue to climb.
Personal and family expenses will increase beyond what many can handle and more people will
eventually be in need of assistance.
Our local emergency and human service agencies are working at or beyond their capacity.
Compounding this, due to the unfavorable real-estate, gasoline, unemployment and inflationary
situations, there has been a dramatic decrease in charitable donations nationwide.
Times are tough, and they aren’t getting any better.
Regardless of personal issues, denominational agendas or the like, I believe that Christians are
commanded by GOD to help the poor, and if you are a Minister or a called man or woman of God – a
Pastor, Preacher, Deacon, Deacon –– your obligation is even greater than that of your congregation.
Spiritual leaders must lead their congregations by surrendering their selfish desires and being an
example of “Jesus in the Flesh”.
Although the Community Action Agency has enough soup kitchen volunteers, they and other local
agencies need additional donations and volunteers.
If you have a sincere desire and the time, talent or resources, please contact the service agency of
your choice.
