Hello again, and thank you for taking the time to read this month’s BlackFrederick.com Community Corner.

I know that it’s hard to believe, but it seems as soon as we’ve finished paying our income taxes, spring cleaning
and the first lawn mowing of the season, Memorial Day has come and gone and here we are in first week of June.

Although generally considered a month associated with graduations, Father’s day observances and increased
outdoor activities, according to an announcement that I received a few days ago, on Saturday June 14th from 3:
00 – 8:00 PM, the Kent Group & Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated Chi Theta Omega Chapter will hold
their annual Juneteenth Cookout Celebration at Overlook Park

Although it is omitted from most history books, Juneteenth, officially celebrated June 19th, is a special day for
many African Americans.

Also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, when Union
General Gordon Granger and 2,000 federal troops arrived in Galveston Texas to take possession of the state
and enforce the emancipation of its slaves.

Although the holiday originated In addition to Texas, the primary home of Juneteenth celebrations, as of February
2008, is an official annual holiday in 26 states.

These states are Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, Delaware, Idaho, Alaska, Iowa, California, Wyoming, Missouri,
Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, New Jersey, New York, Colorado, Arkansas, Oregon, Kentucky, Michigan, New
Mexico, Virginia, Washington, Tennessee, Massachusetts, North Carolina and the District of Columbia

So there you have it, as the late, radio commentator Paul Harvey used to say – “the rest of the story”.

In closing, as I consider Illinois Senator Barack Obama’s historic victory as the Democratic Presidential nominee, I
bid you all a very special, Juneteenth!

Be seeing you.
