When I consider all that has transpired in just 1 month, it should all give us a reason to
seriously consider the brevity of life and how fragile our circumstances or fortunes can be.
The governor of New York has resigned in disgrace.
On the 5th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, 4000 American service members have been killed
in action.
Senator Obama faced a formidable political challenge head-on and is presently the subject of
criticism and derision by a few political pundits and conservative news commentators.
All significant events to be sure, but there are also everyday situations that require solutions
right here in Frederick.
Several weeks ago, when working at the Alan P. Lynton emergency shelter, I met a 53 year old,
black woman who is homeless, unemployed and just a few credits shy of her PhD in
Organizational Leadership in Health and Human Services.
Since that day I have been earnestly trying to use the connections that I’ve made here at
BlackFrederick.com and throughout the county to find safe, no-cost housing and opportunities
for employment interviews.
Unfortunately, she’s only had a few interviews and the emergency shelter closed for the season,
Easter Sunday.
That being the case, she presently lives between the C. Burr Artz Library, her car and whatever
temporary housing she can find.
Bottom line – If we say that we have resources for African-Americans, and we want to network,
why is it so difficult to do so when a person’s life may be at stake?
If you have the time, skills, resources or the desire to help those in need, please let us know
about them at: webmaster@blackfrederick.com.
Times are tough, and are expected to get worse.
We have got to do better.
